Choosing between water or livelihood"... The well that brought hope back to three villages
I am Ahmed, a member of the Ghireigana Committee. In the past, we were more than 8,000 people, including 1,500 displaced persons, and it was truly a real suffering. Three villages had no water at all. We were facing long queues and there was no electricity. The old stations had stopped working, and the ones that were still operating had water mixed with generator oil, which caused kidney diseases and stomach pain for people. Those were very difficult days, to the point that the painful phrase always repeated by people was: ‘We did not know whether to go and fetch water or go and look for food for our children.’ All our effort and time were wasted just trying to find water. But today, the situation has changed because of the rehabilitation of this borehole. There are no more queues and no more problems—no oil, no diseases, no stomach pain. Life has become stable, and clean water is now available for all the people of the village, as well as the displaced persons.
